Olympic Level Skincare

In honor of the Paris games, we’re focusing this post on skincare for athletes. You don’t need to be an Olympian to achieve a routine that works with your active lifestyle!

Athletes often face skincare challenges due to the activity levels of their lifestyles. Frequent exposure to sweat, sun, and environmental factors can take a toll on the skin, making it critical for athletes to adopt a tailored skincare routine. Here are some essential recommendations to help maintain healthy and resilient skin.

First and foremost, proper cleansing of the skin is vital for athletes. Sweat and dirt can clog pores, leading to breakouts and irritation. It’s recommended to use a gentle, skin type-appropriate cleanser twice a day, especially after workouts. Opt for products that are free of harsh chemicals and fragrances to prevent further irritation. Post-exercise, a quick cleanse or a wipe down with a gentle facial wipe can help remove sweat and bacteria until you can do a full cleanse.

Hydration is another key aspect of skincare for athletes (and everyone). Physical activity can lead to dehydration, which can make the skin appear dull and dry. Using a lightweight, daily moisturizer can help maintain the skin’s moisture barrier without clogging pores. At night, choose a heavier-weight product for moisture retention. Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day supports overall skin health.

Protection from the sun is crucial, regardless of whether you train indoors or outdoors. UV rays can penetrate windows and damage the skin, increasing the risk of premature aging and skin cancer. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before heading out and reapplying it every two hours (or more if you’ll be in the water) can provide necessary protection. For those who sweat heavily, water-resistant sunscreen formulas are highly recommended.

Stay on top of your facial appointments. Your esthetician is an expert at crafting a perfect in-spa and at home plan of care that accounts for your schedule and activity level. Not all products and treatments are appropriate at all times, so let the professional do the heavy lifting while you focus on your performance!
